There's no better way to learn about friction than by experiencing it! Here Mrs. Tahvonen's 7th and 8th grade science class rolls a metal ball down a surface to observe how friction affects its speed.

The Great Move: Many Hands

posted Jul 12, 2016, 9:24 AM by Unknown user

The weekend of July 4th saw almost 170 volunteers descend on the new building at St. Ita! There were many wonderful volunteers from St Francis, Loyola Academy, and many of our school families and graduates. We scrubbed, repaired and painted for four solid days.

The asbestos abatement will be finished on July 13th. The carpet is laid and the move starts Monday, July 18th.

We are beginning to see daylight on this project, but there is still much more to do! There are still issues in the building with broken windows, mold and general cleaning. We continue to need help to finish painting the preschool and the art rooms and finish work in the gym. Then there will be the daunting job of unpacking and setting everything up!

The financial needs are still great! Below find a list of remaining needs to be sponsored. All main donors will be recognized on a plaque.

1 Classroom ($5,000 each)  Hallway Carpet ($14,000)
Cafeteria Furnishings ($15,000)
Gym ($20,000) Student Scholarships ($3,200 per year)  Student Lockers (6 for $400)
Teacher Desk/Chair ($300 each)  Movers ($23,000) Dumpsters ($1,600)
Phone Lines, Internet and Security ($16,000)

Thanks to all of the people who have given their time and financial resources to make this a “work that is progressing”. Save the date for our Mass of Blessing on October 7th.

Van Gogh's Bedrooms at the Art Institute

posted Apr 27, 2016, 2:09 PM by Unknown user   [ updated Apr 27, 2016, 2:20 PM ]

On Friday, Ms. Pomranky and Mrs. Accardi accompanied 25 seventh and eighth grade St. Mary of the Lake and St. Thomas of Canterbury students to the Art Institute, where we were met by Mr. and Mrs. Manley.
We were given a special tour of the Van Gogh's Bedrooms exhibit by Ms. Gloria Groom, a curator at the Art Institute. She told the story of Van Gogh's short life and his search for a place to call home. The students enjoyed listening and asking questions about her job as a curator. After our tour, we walked through the Impressionist gallery and made a final stop at Pope Francis's favorite painting: White Crucifixion, by Marc Chagall. It was a one-of-a-kind, delightful experience!
